First Steps

Portland Limestone, H: 64cm W: 50cm D:30cm
Warrenton, Virginia

The message of this artwork is that people have to help each other as a father helps his son, a teacher helps a student, or how any leader helps guide people down the right path. Faces are not carved on the figures so that they may be anyone of us. If eyes, noses and mouths were carved into the figures, then they would represent specific people. The 'abstract' solution to the faces is an effort to keep the focus on what the sculpture is really about …helping each other. Colson started “First Steps” while studying at The Portland Sculpture Trust in Portland, England. Funding for his training was provided by a grant from The Excellence in Education program.
